Top Ten Tuesday: Little-Recognized Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list  that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition (All images courtesy of goodreads.com unless otherwise posted.)

This first group is all mermaid lit authors. As most of you know, I'm currently doing a Mermaid Lit Summer Reaching Challenge. (Details HERE.) I was told before starting that most mermaid books were really stupid and poorly written. I've actually found the opposite to be true. Sure, there are only so many things you can do with a mermaid story, so the plots aren't usually ground-breaking, but I've found almost every title I've read to be well-written, entertaining, and highly original! So, in no particular order, you should check these authors out:

10. Jackson Pearce--Okay, she's actually a pretty well-known author, but I recently read Fathomless (my review here), her retelling of The Little Mermaid, and completely loved it! Can't wait to read her other retellings, now!

9. Terri Farley--Her tale, Seven Tears into the Sea was wonderful! Original and haunting. My review Here. Another great, sea-themed story. (More selkie than mermaid, FYI.)

8. Jenn Reese--Above World (my review) and its sequel, Mirage (my review) have fantastic world building and villains. Great YA fantasy worlds which include mermaids as well as many other great fairy tale creatures!

7. Tera Lynn Childs--SUCH great books. Now, you all know I'm not big on high school drama kinds of books, and that's exactly what these are, but they're so well-written, so funny and oh-so-high-school-girl that I just can't get enough. I read Forgive My Fins (my review) and will probably read  Fins are Forever next week. SOO can't wait! :D Looks like there's a 3rd book on the way as well.

The rest of these are just other authors (not mermaid lit) in no particular order:

6. Dan Wells--I've said it before, but his Partials (my review) series is one of my, if not my favorite dystopian series on the market right now. I'm not even sure why. (Both Veronica Roth's and Veronica Rossi's dystopian series are more romantic.) But, for some reason, it just speaks to me. And, for the record, the romance does pick up in Fragments (my review).

5. Jenniffer Wardell--Fairy Godmother's Inc. is one of the most hilarious, fun, adorable books I've read in a long time (my review) and I see that she already has another on the way. This author is definitely going to make a splash! I see that she's got a second book in the works. Yea!

4. The Brothers Washburn--Horror for the fan that's big on scars, but not on gore. This read so quickly and easily, I couldn't believe how quickly I'd gone through it. (Here's my review.) Definitely loving these guys!

3. Ann Marie Meyers--I just read her middle grade novel, Up in the Air (my review). I'm really not big on middle grade, but I couldn't stop reading this one. Totally going to buy a copy for Christmas and give it to my ten-year-old brother!

2. Lehua Parker--Lehua's Hawiian-set YA story is chalk full of island culture and talk. So much fun to read (my review)! Another I would recommend to any child! Can't wait for the sequel!

1. Jennifer Stewart Griffiths--Her novel, Big in Japan was SO much fun to read. Loved the culture, the totally lovable main character, and the originality. (My review here.) Not many books out there about sumo wrestling. Not in the States, anyway. :D Check this one out!

  2. What a fun list of great authors. I like this idea of highlighting books we loved by authors who may not be the "biggies" out there. Big In Japan sounds great.

  3. Excellent list, Liesel! I need to check out some of your unrecognized authors so that I can decide if I want to add some of their books to my TBR.
