This week's teasers come from Midnight Dreary: The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe by John Evangelist Walsh. This is a non-fiction, but it reads like a novel and so far, I find it fascinating. :D

"When her disbelieving eyes first fell on the Whig's stark notice, Elmira could not have guessed it, but at that moment, Poe had been in his grave one entire day. In the Presbyterian Cemetery of Baltimore, at four o'clock on the afternoon of October 8th, a dark, raw, dismally wet day, the earth closed over all that was mortal of the man many people in sincere admiration had begun to simply call The Raven." Perrin looked down at Aram's body. "I should have taken that fool sword from him the moment he picked it up. I should have sent him back to his family."
Does not a cub deserve his fangs? Hopper asked, genuinely confused. Why would you pull them?
"It is a thing of men," Perrin said.
Things of two-legs, of men. Always, it is a thing of men to you. What of things of wolves?
"I am not a wolf."

So I just started a Harry Potter read-along, courtesy of Book Journey. Go HERE if you want to join us. I haven'tread the HP books in years, so I'm super-excited! Here are some teasers from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone:
Source
"As Harry and Ron walked back to the castle for dinner, their pockets weighed down with rock cakes they'd been too polite to refuse, Harry thought that none of the lessons he'd had to far had given him as much to think about as tea with Hagrid. Had Hagrid collected that package just in time? Where was it now? And did Hagrid know something about Snape that he didn't want to tell?" (pg. 142)

"The carpet glittered with shards of glass, the coffee table shattered. End tables were on their sides, books slid across the floor like a card trick. Even the heavy antique ottoman was belly-up, it's four tiny feet in the air like something dead. In the middle of the mess was a pair of good sharp scissors." (pg. 23-24)

Today's teasers come from The Success Principles by Jack Canfield. I've actually been reading this book since the beginning of the year. My plan was to read one chapter per day. I would probably have only read 20 chapters a month, and it's a thick book. It would have been at least three months. But life's been hectic and I'm only now nearing the end. That said, it's one of the best, most inspiring, most profound books you could ever read. So many great lessons!
"I believe you have inside you a core genius--some one thing that you love to do and do so well that you hardly feel like charging people for it. And if you could make money doing it, you'd make it your lifetime's work. Successful people believe this, too. That's why they put their core genius first. They focus on it--and delegate everything else to other people on their team." (pg. 277)

This week's teasers come from Outpost, book 2 of Ann Aguirre's Razorland series.

"The surviving growers rallied enough to go about their business, at least, but they did it with a mournful air. It seemed to me that seeds planted with bloody fingers should yield a bitter fruit, but I didn't express my reservations." (pg. 69)

This week's teasers come from L.A. Noir by John Buntin. It's about Mickey Cohen and L.A. as it was in the twenties and thirties. I got this when it was on sale on Amazon, as I'm interested in True Crime and write crime fiction myself, I thought I'd give it a shot. So far, it's terribly interesting!
"Nights were exciting and frequently rewarding, both financially and psychologically. Armed robbery, Mickey found, did wonders for his self-esteem." (Pg. 46, Kindle Edition)

Today's teasers come from Enclave by Ann Aguirre. This is one that's been on my TBR list for a long time, and I finally got a copy for Christmas, but am just now getting around to it.

Nimble looked thoughtful. "What do you think a wedding is?"
"Some kind of party? Maybe like we have after naming day?" I did wonder why the paper had been sealed in a box full of sweet-smelling powder, but I had long since accepted that I'd never understand everything. In the enclave, it mattered more that we performed well in our allotted roles. Life didn't permit extensive curiosity; there was no time for it. (Pg. 25, Kindle edition)

This week's teasers come from The Fault in Our Stars by John Greene. So glad to finally be reading this!
"Sometimes you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book. And then there are books like An Imperial Affliction, which you can't tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal." I'm finally on the last book of Souls Screamers, With All My Soul by Rachel Vincent. Yea! Here are some teasers:

Tod opened his mouth, and I took the first sip before he could offer to drink it for me. To test it on himself. The last think I needed was for him to develop an irrational envy. The only person he could possibly be jealous of was Nash, and it had taken me forever to get the two of them back on speaking terms. Backward momentum was not okay.
"Yuck!" I made a face and wished for a cookie to rid my mouth of the foul film. "Envy tastes bitter."

"Should I just make myself at home, like company?" Thane started toward the living room, but Nash stepped into his path.
"No, you should stay right where you are, or my estranged brother and I will settle our differences by seeing who can break more of your bones."
Tod glanced at him, brows raised. "You want to settle our differences?"
Nash frowned. "No, I want to break every bone in his body, and I didn't think you'd let me do it alone."
Tod nodded. "Good call."

Maybe we were both crazy. Maybe we were really sharing a delusion in some real-world psych ward. Maybe my ex-boyfriend was in the room next door. Maybe Kaylee was the sanest person I knew.
I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head--that was the scariest thought I'd ever had.
"I'm a necromancer," Luca said, and I opened my eyes to look at him. "But that doesn't mean what most people think it means.
"Well, I'm not most people. I have no idea what that means."

Teaser Tuesday: If I Die (Soul Screamers #5) by Rachel Vincent

Before we get to this week's teasers, here are the answers to yesterday's historical quiz:

A. Albert Einstein   B. Martin Luther King, Jr.   C. Amelia Earhart   D. Napoleon Bonaparte   E. Mother Theresa   F. J.R.R. Tolkien

A few guessed Napoleon--guess the outfit gave it away, huh?--and someone got Martin Luther King as well. (Great job to everyone who hazarded guesses, by the way!) The one that really floors me is Mother Teresa. She must be seven years old there. Crazy!

"Fine, I promise," he said at last, and I let him fold me into a hug.
As he squeezed me, his heart beating against my ear, I knew only two things for sure: I was going to die, and my father was lying.

"Why are you trying to brush this off?" This isn't like having a drink at a party or lighting up behind the shop building. We're talking about humans inhaling the toxic life force sucked out of a demon from another world." Quite possibly the weirdest sentence I'd ever said aloud... "And according to your mom, if they survive the addiction--and that's a big if--their scrambled brains'll make Ozzy Osbourne look rational and coherent." (Kindle format, pg. 37)

Today's teasers come from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It's kind of weird reading this book because the main character shares my name--same spelling and everything--and my name is unique enough that I don't run into it every often. It's kind of freaking me out. :D
"For now, Rudy and Liesel made their way onto Himmel Street in the rain. He was the crazy one who had painted himself black and defeated the world. She was the book thief without words.
Trust me, though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would wring them out like the rain."

Not the vines! Last time I'd seen them they tried to pull me into the ground. I let out a scream. "I do believe in spooks--I mean magic. I do believe in magic. I do, I do, I do."
"You all right, sugah?" Ms. Wanda extended her hand, reaching for me. Except it was all bone. There was no skin. Her hand was a boney, white skeleton. A bony, white skeleton hand holding a bouquet of roses.
"AAAHH!" I shrieked, closing my eyes tight.
